How to Reset Your TikTok Algorithm for a Better TikTok Feed

How to Reset Your TikTok Algorithm for a Better TikTok Feed

Published on 4th of February 2025

If you are on TikTok, you will know that the app ‘feeds’ you the content you are interested in. It does this with the help of the ever-elusive TikTok algorithm.

However, you may have noticed that your For You page no longer reflects everything you want to see on your feed. This is not a reflection of the algorithm’s failure but rather a sign that your content preferences have changed.

Fortunately, the algorithm is highly adaptable. This means that with a little bit of effort, you can reset or retrain it. Doing this will allow you to curate your feed better to align with your current preferences.

Understanding How the Algorithm Works

The TikTok algorithm determines what appears on your FYP (For You Page). It uses a combination of elements to show you the content you want to see.

These elements include your account’s engagement history. This refers to videos you like, share, and comment on. Videos you watch more than once or to the end also make a huge difference in the content that will ultimately pop up on your FYP.

When you interact or engage with content creators, you signal to the algorithm what type of content you want to see. The algorithm searches for hashtags, captions, and sounds to find content that matches your needs.

On a lesser scale, your location, preferred language, and the type of device you use also shape your TikTok feed.

Why Reset Your TikTok Algorithm?

There are several reasons to reset your TikTok feed. For instance, you may have once liked watching cheerleading or dance trends, but you now prefer comedy videos.

You may still like the dancing videos, but because you see so much of the same thing, it has become annoying and repetitive.

When you watch the same types of videos over and over, it creates a very narrow TikTok feed. When you reset the algorithm, you can explore different types of content that still relate to your interests.

Resetting the Algorithm in 2025

We are in the beginning of 2025, which makes it the perfect time to reset the algorithm for the new year.

The first and most important thing you need to do to reset the algorithm is clear the cache while on the app. Select the Settings and Privacy option from the menu icon on your profile.

Scroll until you find Cache & Cellular, and tap on Free Up Space. This will clear the cache, erasing the algorithm’s memory of your preferred content.

Dislike Videos

The next step is to dislike videos you have no interest in seeing. Remember, the algorithm builds your feed based on your interactions. So, if you dislike or unlike videos you were previously interested in, it sends a strong signal to the algorithm.

Open the TikTok app and navigate to the For You section. Click on a video you are no longer interested in and hold. After a second or two, you will get a list of options. Choose the Not Interested option to refresh your TikTok feed.

You can also go to the Liked section on your profile and remove your likes from each video. The more videos you unlike, the more you tell the algorithm about the content you want to see.

It is important to note that the algorithm pattern will likely not change immediately. You must give it some time to adapt to your new preferences.

Delete Your Watch History

There are other ways you can try to speed up the resetting process. This includes deleting your watch history on the app. You can do this by visiting your profile, choosing settings and privacy, scrolling to watch history, and then clearing it.

Intentional Engagement

After showing the algorithm what you do not want to see, you must also show it what interests you. This is where intentional engagement comes in. You can start by following content creators who post content you love.

Whenever you watch a new and exciting video, like and comment on it. You should actively search for videos to watch by using the search bar to find hashtags or topics.

The more you engage with videos you like, the easier it will be to retrain the algorithm and reshape your FYP.

Unfollow Irrelevant Accounts

If you are still following creators whose content you are not interested in, unfollow them. You can do this by going to your profile and tapping on Following. Review the list and unfollow anyone whose content no longer interests you.

Create a New Account

This is a more drastic option but guarantees a complete algorithm reset. You can delete your old account by going to Profile, Settings and Privacy, and Account. Here, you can deactivate or delete your account. If you change your mind about deleting your old account, you can reactivate it within 30 days by logging in with your old credentials.

When you are ready to sign up for a new account, use the dedicated TikTok signup page. You can like and comment on completely new videos immediately when you have a new account. This will allow the algorithm to build a feed of content you want to see.

Monitor and Adjust

Even if you start over with a new account, resetting the TikTok algorithm is not a once-off task. You must keep an eye on your engagement habits and adjust as needed.

You should still be clearing your watch history and marking uninteresting videos. Doing this will keep the algorithm searching for videos you want to watch.

Benefits of a TikTok Feed Overhaul

When you overhaul your TikTok feed and reset the algorithm, you will only see content that interests you. You will likely also notice less irrelevant or repetitive videos on your feed.

Moreover, you have a better chance of coming across creators, trends, and topics you may otherwise not have explored.

Seeing content that motivates and inspires you also positively affects your mental health and mood.

TikTok introduced a new feature in 2023 that makes an algorithm overhaul easier. The Refresh option helps surface content, making it look like you have just started searching for videos for the first time.

Resetting the TikTok Algorithm Is Easier Than You Think

Whether you want a big or small change to your TikTok feed, resetting the algorithm is the best way to make it happen. So, take control of your TikTok experience and work your way toward a completely personalized feed.
