Deleting TikToks: How to Delete TikTok Videos, Reposts, and Stories
Published on 25th of February 2025Contents
If you have been on TikTok for a couple of years, chances are you have created hundreds, if not thousands, of videos. You would likely have a couple hundred stories and more than enough reposts.
If this rings true for you, you would have also thought about deleting some of that content. Some posts are easier to delete than others, but the following guide will show you how to get rid of unwanted content as quickly as possible.
Why Delete TikTok Content?
Even if you haven’t considered deleting some of your past content, there are several reasons you should. For one, if you have sensitive information on the TikTok platform, you should delete it.
Other reasons to delete content include outdated videos or stories. This is especially important if you are an influencer or business because your audience demands up-to-date information.
If your profile has existing TikTok videos that contain errors, you should also remove them. The same goes for videos that don’t serve an actual purpose for your content strategy.
Remember that your videos will automatically be removed if you breach any of TikTok’s official content guidelines. However, you do not want to get to that point, so ensure that all your content is “TikTok-approved.”
How to Delete TikTok Videos
Before we get into how to delete TikTok videos, it is crucial to understand when and when not to delete a video.
Impatience is not a reason to delete a video. For instance, if you spent a week creating a video that is not performing as well as you thought on the first day, do not delete it.
Even if you dislike that video, keeping it on your account is important. The more videos you upload, the more you help the TikTok algorithm understand what type of content you create. This is vital for establishing a presence and finding an audience on the platform.
On the other hand, you may experience bullying or harassment because of a particular video. If your video does not violate TikTok’s rules, there is no need to delete it. But you must report the harassment immediately.
While you wait for TikTok to respond to your report, you can turn off comments on your videos or make your account private.
Download Your Videos Before Deleting Them
If you decide that deletion is the only way to go, download your videos before you get rid of them. This is easy to do – simply go to each video, tap the three dots in the lower right corner and choose ‘save video.’
When you are ready to delete your videos, decide whether you want to do this on mobile or via your laptop. If you choose mobile, the process is as follows:
- Choose the video you want to delete.
- Tap on the three dots.
- Scroll until you find ‘delete’ and tap on it when the option pops up.
On a desktop or laptop computer, you should:
- Go to the relevant video.
- Tap on the dots.
- Choose ‘delete.’
- A message will pop up prompting you to select ‘delete’ again.
Can You Delete Videos Posted By Someone Else?
- You cannot delete another content creator’s TikTok videos. However, you can report them, and TikTok may choose to take it down. If you want to report a video, follow these steps:
- Click on the video.
- Press and hold.
- Select the ‘report’ option.
- Choose a reason (from the popup).
- Submit the report.
Deleting Reposted Videos on TikTok
You can also delete videos you have reposted on TikTok. All you need to do is open the app, tap on Profile, and file the video you need to delete.
Tap on the video and wait for it to play. Tap the share icon on the right side and select ‘remove repost.’
Remember that it is impossible to delete the videos that others have reposted. This is because reposted videos become part of the profile of the user who reposted it.
Still, you can try to reduce the chances of your videos being reposted in the first place. Via the profile icon, you can navigate to the burger menu at the top of your screen and select ‘Settings and privacy.’ Here, you can disable the repost function. If you want to completely restrict reposting on your videos, change the option to ‘Only Me.’
You can also prevent reposting of other types of content by restricting reposts on Stickers, Stitch and Duet, and Story under settings. You should also turn the ‘downloads’ option off.
Deleting TikTok Stories
Reposting videos and sharing TikTok stories by accident happens a lot. You already know how to delete a reposted video, but what do you do with a story that should not have been shared?
If you have an Android or iOS device, open the app and tap the profile icon. Open your profile photo and swipe up on Story. Tap Delete and then tap it again to confirm you want to delete.
You can also tap the Share button at the bottom of the story and then select Delete.
If you are on an old version of TikTok, tap on the profile icon and your profile photo. Open the story you want to delete and tap on the three-dot icon. A menu will pop up that includes the option to delete. You will also have to select Delete twice.
You can choose who sees and interacts with your TikTok Stories by tapping the Share button on a story, going to settings, and making a selection.
If you want to protect your account and content fast, make your account private. This will allow you to choose who can see any of your content.
Managing Your TikTok Content
It is important to manage your TikTok content before it becomes critical to delete videos, reposts, and stories. You can do this by reviewing your content regularly and using TikTok’s privacy settings.
Remember that if you do not back up your content before deleting it, you will lose it permanently. So, you must not rush the review or deleting process to ensure you do not delete valuable content.
